Peace Poles Serve as a Reminder to Let Peace Prevail on Earth

The Hillsboro Rotary Club, in partnership with the Hillsboro School District, is installing Peace Poles at Hillsboro High School campuses. On Wednesday, August 27, the Club installed its latest Peace Pole at Liberty High School. Each pole displays the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” in the language of the country where it is placed. The message is an affirmation of peace, and its placement furthers Rotary’s goal of fostering a culture of peace worldwide.

The Peace Pole Project is a global initiative that was started by Masahisa Goi in 1955. An estimated 250,000 Peace Poles are located in every country throughout the world as monuments to peace. After witnessing the devastation left by World War II and the dropping of atomic bombs in Japan, Goi dedicated himself to promoting peace and harmony on earth. The message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” came to him in a moment of prayer and inspiration. Peace Poles inscribed with this message began to appear across Japan, and the message spread through the Peace Pole Project. This project made its way to the United States in 1986, “The International Year of Peace.” Peace Poles are now recognized as the most prominent international symbol and monument to peace. They remind us to think, speak, and act in the spirit of peace and harmony, and they stand as a silent visual for peace to prevail on earth.

Liberty High School’s Peace Pole features eight languages representing the diversity of students. Those languages include Dari, English, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Hillsboro Rotary Club’s Past President, Donna Bosak, presented the Peace Pole to Liberty High School’s Principal, Dr. Dennis Joule, by stating, “In the spirit of peace and goodwill, we now officially dedicate this Peace Pole as a reminder that students who enter Liberty High School are supported in the spirit of peace and welcomed.”

Rotary is a global network of more than 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.
